Bashiru Garba (PhD)

Dr. Bashiru Garba is a public health epidemiologist and veterinary scientist specializing in zoonotic and vaccine-preventable diseases in crisis-affected populations. He holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a MVPH and DVM from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Nigeria.

His research integrates field epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, and mixed-methods to study diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and health behaviours, while developing practical WASH and vaccination interventions. He has led projects on mortality surveillance, COVID-19 seroprevalence, leptospirosis, and antimicrobial stewardship.

Dr. Garba has authored 50+ publications and serves as PI or Co-I on projects funded by CDC and WHO. He also teaches epidemiology, health research methods, occupational health, and food safety, strengthening public health capacity in Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health, Universiti Putra Malaysia; Master of Veterinary Public Health (MVPH), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria; Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria

My research examines zoonotic and vaccine-preventable diseases in crisis-affected populations. I combine field epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, and mixed-methods to investigate diseases and antimicrobial resistance, strengthen disease and mortality surveillance, and co-design practical WASH and vaccination solutions with communities in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa

  • Mortality surveillance in crises: Led community-based mortality surveillance among internally displaced populations in Banadir, Somalia (2022–2023), improving ascertainment and decision-making.
  • WASH and hygiene behaviours: Mixed-methods research on determinants of hand hygiene among IDPs in Baidoa; identified structural and sociocultural barriers to behaviour change.
  • Leptospirosis molecular epidemiology: PhD work in Sokoto, Nigeria, integrating IgG ELISA and RT-PCR on rodents to demonstrate circulation of pathogenic Leptospira and community risk factors.
  • COVID-19 epidemiology in Somalia: Seroprevalence studies in Benadir and among pregnant women; drivers of vaccine uptake among health workers; impacts on routine immunisation and TB adherence.
  • Antimicrobial resistance and stewardship: Hospital-based AMS and AMR surveillance pilots aligned with Somalia’s NAP-AMR; capacity-building for laboratories and clinical teams.
  • Adolescent SRH access: Mixed-methods assessment of service access and delivery for adolescents and youth in Mogadishu.
  • Methods innovation for mortality estimation: Partnership work under UKHIH to advance modelling approaches and qualitative methods using burial-attendant interviews.
  • Publications and leadership: 50+ peer-reviewed papers; PI or co-I on projects funded by CDC, WHO, and partners; active postgraduate supervision and training.
